Step 1: Identify Drive Requirements

Start by gathering key specifications:

  • Actual horsepower needed
  • Operating speed (RPM) of the drive
  • Center distance between pulleys
  • Pulley size limitations

Knowing these parameters will narrow down which belt types are suitable for your system.

Step 2: Apply the Service Factor

Every application has different operating demands. The Service Factor adjusts for load conditions, duty cycles, and potential shock loads.

  • Light-duty applications like small fans or centrifugal pumps may have a service factor as low as 1.0.
  • Heavy-duty machinery like crushers or ball mills may require a factor of 1.5–1.8.

Multiply your Actual Horsepower by the Service Factor to calculate Design Horsepower.

Step 3: Select the Belt Section

Using your Design Horsepower and the speed of the faster shaft, choose the appropriate belt cross-section (e.g., A, B, C, 3V, 5V). Keep in mind:

  • Cogged belts can operate on smaller pulleys and handle higher temperatures.
  • Using pulleys smaller than the recommended minimum will significantly reduce belt life.
